Tuesdays With Dorie: Chockablock Cookies

There are moments in our lives that present an opportunity for growth; a chance to stretch beyond the boundaries of our comfort zone, if only we would take the risk. The making of this week's Tuesdays With Dorie recipe (Chockablock Cookies, chosen by Mary of Popsicles and Sandy Feet), despite my intentions, was not one of those moments.

You see, I know that I don't like dried fruit in cookies. I never have. Oatmeal raisin cookies? No, thanks - those stayed in the cookie jar when I was a kid. Fig newtons? Nope, not my style. But I occasionally dip my toes into the dried-fruit-in-cookies pond, just to see if my opinion has changed.

Unfortunately, it hasn't. Which is a shame, because this cookie was so promising. Coconut, chocolate chips, molasses - what's not to love about that? But then, that dastardly dried fruit - in my case, dried cranberries.

If anyone could convert me, it's Dorie. So I think it's time to put the nail in this particular coffin - dried fruit in baked goods is just not for me. Sigh.

Thank you, Mary, for choosing a recipe that convinced me to give dried fruit another chance! If you are a dried fruit fan, visit her blog for the recipe, which I'm sure you'll love.

When I was your age I didn't like dried fruit either! Now I'm old, 54 and my tastes have changed. I still don't like raisins. I like the texture of dates in small pieces. The dried fruit mix I used had small pieces of several kinds of fruit.
Try this recipe when you are 50! I enjoy your blog. Keep baking!

I get your "confliction" about fruit in sweets. I have the same thing about chocolate and fruit. Always up for giving it another try but like you, these easy little cookies did not change my mind. You did a nice job with them anyway.

Yours look just fine regardless of your lack of love for them. These are obviously, not for everyone.

Well, at least you tried. Normally, fruit in cookies is a take it or leave it for me. But I did enjoy this cookie.

okay i'm totally giggling. as i read that firt paragraph about being inspired going out of our bounds, etc. I was thinking..."wow these cookies really moved her."

Then i got down to the next paragraph and just started laughing.

yours are really a beautiful color.

hope you'll join me with the burnt sugar ice cream next week. no dried fruits there!

So much upheaval with the chocolate fruit and chocolate/molasses combos! Glad you at least tried them - the look delicious - I'd eat them! I usually don't make these "kitchen sink" type cookies - since people are so finicky about one ingredient or the other. Simple chocolate chip works best! Nicely done!

I'm with you on the dried fruit in the cookie, but this one actually changed me a little bit - I actually enjoyed the version with the fruit better than the one without! Regardless, your cookies look gorgeous!

No one can say you didn't give it a good enough try. I think you have earned the right to just leave out the dried fruit!

Sorry you didn't like these. I feel the same, but not because of the dried fruits... For me it's the oats, I have never really cared about them and didn't like them in these cookies either!

Meg April 28, 2010 at 2:33:00 PM EDT

Sorry that these were not a hit with you! I was worried about the fruit too, but it was ok for me.

i bet they'd be awesome without the fruit, if you ever care to try them again. if you have leftovers of this batch, plz send them my way! :)

TeaLady April 29, 2010 at 6:47:00 PM EDT

Yeah, I feel the same way. No fruit (except cranberries once in a GREAT while) in cookies. I would like to try these san fruit and see how they taste.

Look good tho.
